Let's hear it for the girl!

As Women's History Month comes to a close, I am thrilled to introduce you to two strong (fictional) young ladies sure to inspire a new generation to break down walls and follow their dreams!

To your right, I introduce Korra. For those of you young (and older) fans of Nickeodeon's smash hit series, "Avatar: The Last Airbender", you may already already know that Korra is the star of the sequel, aptly called, "The Legend of Korra."

While the series debuts on Nickelodeon April 14th, I was lucky enough to catch a sneak peak of the first two episodes and can honestly tell you that everyone is in for a treat!

Taking place several decades after the end of the first series, Korra emerges as the new master of the four elements after Aang's (the previous Avatar and star of the original series) time has passed.

However, the world in which Korra lives is quite different than the one who desperately needed Aang. In this more modern world, where benders of all sorts live together, technology has moved along while manipulation of the elements is looked on as something for use in spectator sports and suspicion. Korra is strong willed and spirited. She has mastered water (her native element), fire and earth but is finding air to be tricky as her impulsive nature counters the patience and serenity associated with air bending.

Tenzin, Aang's son is tasked with training Korra, though their personalities are opposite. However, mastering air may be the least of Korra's problems as she may have to convince the world the still do indeed need their Avatar.

To your right, stands Merida, star of the upcomming Disney Pixar film, "Brave".

Merida is a headstrong Scottish Princess and expert archer, who refuses to be the prize in an age old ritual which decides who will have her hand in marriage.

What she does not realize is that in breaking tradition she inadvertantly plunges her kingdom into chaos.

When consulting a wise woman for help, she becomes the victim of a curse which can only be broken when she discovers the true meaning of bravery.

From the trailers that have been released we can see that the animation is stellar. From someone who has traveled to the Highlands of Scottland I can tell you that the artists have captured the landscape perfectly and of course, Merida promises to be a force to be reckoned with.

Anyone who is tired of Disney's pageant of pink clad princesses who wait around to be rescued may find an irresistable flame in Merida.

Though her choices may not always be the best we can be sure she will learn a lot through her adventures and I am sure we will all enjoy her journey.

"Brave" premiers June 22nd!

Dreaming of Summer....(and Bubbles)

Featuring guest blogger Gordon-Bob, library fish extraordinaire.

Spring is ok, but I like summer. The truth is, I LOVE summer. First of all, (and most importantly), my birthday is during the summer- June 21st to be exact (but I'm sure you have that on your calendars). Summer is sunshine. Fish love sunshine. Summer is full of warm, tropical weather (something we suburban fish love to take advantage of). Summer is vacations and the beach (I burn, so I prefer to stay in the water) and making lots of memories with friends and family. I also love the summer because it means lots of FUN and transformation here at the library. Have you seen how our librarians decorate??? And for my part, I always try to be sure my fins are just the right color to match...

What's that? You want to help??? Well that is GREAT NEWS!!! On Wednesday, April 11 children are invited to come on down and create a super, dream-like decoration for us to hold and then display in the Children's Room during the summer months. There are three time slots available with age appropriate crafts for each. Let's fill up the whole Children's Room! Registration for the "Dreaming of Summer" craft begins on March 19. You can see more about the program here, or give us a call.

Hope to see you in the library soon!

Happy 100th Birthday, Oreo!

On March 6th, the Oreo cookie celebrated its 100th birthday!

The world's favorite cookie was first produced in the National Biscuit Company's (Nabisco) Chelsea bakeries in Manhattan; it even has a street named after it - Oreo Way, West 15th street between 9th and 10th Avenues, the site of the original bakery.

Here's a fun site to visit:
