That Spooky Time of Year!

The sky is getting darker earlier each night, and pumpkins are everywhere.  While costumes and candy are likely on everyone's mind, another Halloween tradition lurks within the stacks of your own library!


Scary Stories! Whether you prefer short tales to chill your bones, or a longer page turner with shivers waiting within each chapter, Syosset Public Library has just what you need.


Here are some of my own favorites.

Not for the feint of heart, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, is a favorite! These books have been around for decades, and feature short tales no longer than four pages long. If Stephen Gammell's illustrations don't scare you away from the cover art, you will surely enjoy the series as a whole.

If you're pressed for time, check out Half-Minute Horrors, a collection of short stories from famous authors such as, Lemony Snicket, and Neil Gaiman. Each story proves that you don't need more than 30 seconds to tell a good scary story. 

Another longtime favorite is the Goosebumps series, by R.L. Stine. These books have freaked out readers since the early 90's, and has gone on to spawn a television series, as well as several movies, one of which is due out October 16th, 2015.

For those who find these books to be mere appetizers, feel free to check out anything from the list below, which are longer reads, but still quite freaky.
