National Lighthouse Day

Wednesday, August 7th is National Lighthouse Day! Why August 7th you ask? Well the government realized how important it was for ships to be safe from inclement weather so they decided to build lighthouses all around the country.  Thanks to these lighthouse, over the years they have saved many ships and a number of lives.

Here on Long Island we have 25 beautiful lighthouses with Montauk Point being one of its famous built under President George Washington in 1796.  It is one of three lighthouses on Long Island that allows visitors to climb to the top.  Each of these magnificent lighthouses have their own history and story and many are open to the public to explore.

Take a ride and explore some of these lighthouses this summer!
