"Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!" This is what you might say today if you were living in England. In fact it has long been a superstition in the UK, that if you say, "Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" on the first of every month it will bring you good luck. While no one seems to be quite sure where this superstition began, I thought I would take the time to honor three famous literary rabbits in honour (they spell honor with a "u" in the UK) of this popular practice!
Rabbit: Winnie the Pooh.
While most of you won't recognize him in his original illustration from A.A. Milne's original Winnie-the-Pooh books, Rabbit is one of the main characters who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood alongside Pooh, Piglet and the rest of the gang. Though he often comes off as unfriendly at first, he warms up to newcomers after he gets to know them. I made sure to include his better known Disney image on the right.
Peter Rabbit: The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Peter is the mischevious brother of Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail and the son of Mr. Josephine Rabbit. He disobeys the rules to avoid Mr. McGregor's garden and eats as many vegetables as he can before he is spotted and chased away. Because of this he loses his beautiful jacket and his shoes which Mr. McGregor takes to use for a scarecrow.
Knuffle Bunny: Mo Willems' Knuffle Bunny series.
Knuffle Bunny, pronounced "KUH-nuffle" Bunny, is the favorite stuffed toy of Trixie. He is often the center of drama, because he often gets lost, left somewhere or is mixed up with another stuffed bunny.
He is very beloved to Trixie and his name was actually her very first word.
