Spotlight on: The Caldecott Award

If you've visited us at the library, you've probably noticed that some of our books have stickers on the spine. One particular sticker that you may have spotted is the Caldecott Award sticker. So, you're probably thinking to yourself, "Well, what does that mean?" or, "What's a Caldecott Award, anyway?"

The Caldecott Award is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The award is given to the author from the previous year. It is historically considered to be the most important children's book award.

Here are some additional and interesting facts about the Caldecott Award:

  • The bronze medal has the winner's name and date engraved on the back.
  • The award is not worn, but rather, presented in a cherry wood box for display on a desk or a flat surface.
  • The first Caldecott Award was given to Dorothy P. Lathrop for book, Animals of the Bible.
  • The award is named for Randolph Caldecott, a nineteenth century English illustrator.
  • It weights 3.1 ounces.

We've selected some of our favorite Caldecott Award books. To check their availability, visit our catalog at https://catalog.syossetlibrary.org/  or, ask one of your cool Children's Librarian by calling 516-921-7161 ext. 211.
