Ways to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Covid Times

Thanksgiving will look a little different to many families this year. In the past, Thanksgiving meant a time for families to gather around the dinner table while inhaling the smells of fall, and eating delicious turkey. Unfortunately, that wont really be the case this year as we adhere to Covid-19 guidelines. However, there are other ways to celebrate while socially distancing.

  1. Read books about Thanksgiving! Luckily, the Syosset Public Library has a wonderful collection of Thanksgiving books to choose from. Search our catalog at https://catalog.syossetlibrary.org/  or, contact us, your favorite children's librarians at 516-921-7161 ext. 211 for help.
  2. Give Back! Now more than ever, families all over are in need. Donate food, clothing, blankets, etc. to charities so families can not only have a nice Thanksgiving, but also be provided for all year round too. Here are a few places that you can donate to:

A) Island Harvest- Created in 1992, Island Harvest is Long Island's largest hunger relief organization. Their aim is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. They have a couple of locations where you can drop off food including Bethpage, Uniondale and Calverton. Visit https://www.islandharvest.org/about-us/our-story/ for more information.

B) The Rudman Food Pantry- focuses on homebound and low income families. In addition to non-perishable foods, household supplies, and personal care items, the Rudman Family Food Pantry now has volunteers shopping for perishable food groceries and delivering them. Visit https://miyjcc.org/the-rudman-family-food-pantry/ for more information.

C) Check your local churches and synagogues and see if they are partnering with any food banks and/or organizations.

3. Take a walk! Walk around your neighborhood or visit a state park (weather permitting).
4. Phone your family members and let them know that even though you cant spend this Thanksgiving with them, you are thinking of them.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
