Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month! Throughout the month of November, learn about Native Americans traditions, contributions, music, and culture. Here are some of the ways that you can celebrate Native American Heritage Month:

1) Check out books about Native Americans from the library. We have a great collection!

To check any of these books out or more, contact us, your favorite children's librarians at 516-921-7161 ext. 211 or visit our website at www.syossetlibrary.org

2) Visit a Native American Museum. Did you know, New York is home to many Native American museums?  They include:
  • The National Museum of the American Indian (New York City)
  • Garvies Point Museum and Preserve (Glen Cove, NY)
  •  Iroquois Indian Museum (Howes Cave, NY)
  • Fenimore Art Museum (Cooperstown, NY)
  • The Wild Center (Adirondacks, NY)

...and many more!

3) Visit an Indian reservation. In fact, did you know, Long Island is home to the Shinnecock Indian Reservation and the Poospatuck Indian Reservation? Spend a weekend visiting and learning about these reservations and cultures.

There are many different ways that you can celebrate Native American Heritage Month. However way you choose, take this month to learn more about Native American life and culture.

Enjoy!
