Thanksgiving is next week, Thursday, November 24, 2022. Who's ready to eat all that turkey and stuffing? I know I am! Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to spend with friends and family and to refelct on moments of gratitude. But, it is also a time to look back at the history of the holiday too.
Here are some facts about Thanksgiving that you can drop at the dinner table:
- In 1621, the Pilgrims and Pokanokets came together for a harvest celebration. Governor William Bradford organized a three day celebration and invited their new indingious allies including the Wampanoag Chief, Massasoit.
- The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate Thanksgiving.
- The Pilgrims set sail for 66 days across the Atlantic Ocean and the ship they sailed on was called the Mayflower.
- In 1789, George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving Proclimation by the US National Government.
- Congress passed an official Proclimation in 1941 and declared that Thanksgiving would be oberseved as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November, every year.
