January is National Oatmeal Month. This much maligned month is apparently the ideal time to celebrate a variety of
things including soup, hot tea, and bath safety. However, since oatmeal is a beloved breakfast
food and I happen to have a favorite book on oatmeal, I thought it would be the perfect time to highlight it:
The Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating by A.W. Flaherty
This is the story of Katerina-Elizabeth, who sailed on an
ocean liner across the Atlantic to visit her grandmother in Scotland. Along the way, she was served oatmeal every
day for breakfast, which she detested.
She threw it overboard into the ocean where it was enjoyed by a tiny sea
worm. He follows the ship across the
ocean and grows to be none other than the Loch Ness Monster.
