Summer Movies 2013!

Last year was indeed the "Year of the Superhero" as Marvel's The Avengers, The Amazing Spiderman, and The Dark Knight Rises overtook the excitement of most other summer movies. While we all loved those movies, I can't say that they qualified as "children's" because aside from each one centering around famous comic book heroes, the other thing all three had in common was a PG-13 rating.

 However, we did have some non-caped children's films such as Pixar's Brave (My favorite), and sequels to franchises such as Madagascar and Ice Age  as well as the third installment in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid film adaptions.

This year holds, yes, more superheroes but also some more sequels to favorites of the past.

Monsters University is not so much a sequel as it is a prequel.
In this film, we are brought back to Sully and Mike's first meeting at the University where monsters are taught to scare.

Original voice talents Billy Crystal and John Goodman are set to reprise their rolls as the two man characters.

No doubt, the folks over at Pixar will hide several goodies within each frame to delight both fans of the original Monsters Inc. as well as newcomers.


The release date is June 21st.

For those who have been wondering how (former?) super villain Gru has been fairing with his new adopted daughters, the wait is over!

Despicable Me 2 will follow Gru, his new family and of course those adorable minions in their new roll as secret villain busters.

If you can't get enough minions, worry not.  They have their own movie in the works.  Until then, Despicable Me 2 opens July 3rd.

If you prefer little blue men to little yellow minions, The Smurfs are set to return to the big screen with the aptly named, The Smurfs 2.

The sequel takes our little blue friends globetrotting to Paris, France in order to rescue Smurfette from their long time foe, Gargamel.

Once again, Neil Patrick Harris will be lending his talents to this movie as he had in the original.


The Smurfs 2 is scheduled to paint the screen blue on July 31st.

It isn't all sequels for the summer.  Turbo from DreamWorks studios follows Theo, a garden snail who dreams of becoming a racing snail.

When an accident gives Theo super speed he becomes "Turbo", giving him the chance to live out his heart's desire.

Does slow and steady win the race or will "Turbo" let his new found powers go to his head?


Turbo opens July 17th.







If you are looking to refresh your memory of any original of the above mentioned sequel, stop by the library and pick up a copy.  They are sure to be a hot commodity.
