Congratulations to the 2012 Newbery Medal winner: Dead End In Norvelt by Jack Gantos.

In the historic town of Norvelt, Pennsylvania, twelve-year-old Jack Gantos spends the summer of 1962 grounded for various offenses until he is assigned to help an elderly neighbor with a most unusual chore involving the newly dead, molten wax, twisted promises, Girl Scout cookies, underage driving, lessons from history, typewriting, and countless bloody noses.

Remembering the Civil Rights Movement

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and those who fought hard for civil rights, enjoy this great book by Patricial McKissack.

A Friendship for today is a story about Rosemary a smart and strong African American girl who is about to intergrate a formerly all white school.

Upon her entering into the first day of her new school year, she discovers two unfortunate matters.

First, her best friend who was supposed to intergrate with her has been hosptialized with polio and will not be able to start school with her. Second, Grace "the face", daughter of the most prejudiced family in town is in her class.

However, rosemary learns that there is more to Grace that she first thought and the girl is not as cruel as she seems. In fact, Grace may just be the best friend Rosemary can have in a time where she feels so terribly alone.

A story not to be missed.

The Backseat Book Club

In case you missed it, back in October NPR (National Public Radio) launched a book club for young readers. Each month a title will be selected and after reading the book, you can submit questions. At the end of the month, some of the questions will be put to the book’s author on the afternoon radio program All Things Considered.

The Adventures of Tintin!

Last month new audiences were introduced to Jim Henson's wonderful creations in "The Muppets"!

This December, another "oldie" even older than the Muppets will make their debut to a whole new audience. Steven Speilberg and Peter Jackson have been hard at work adapting "The Adventures of Tintin" for the big screen and of course for modern audiences. As you can tell from the picture to your right, the visuals look stunning.

The movie is based on a 1920's Belgian serial comic by Herge and will be the first in a trilogy. It has been stated that Jackson and Speilberg are on board to co-direct the second installment.

The story follows the adventures of Tintin, a young Belgian reporter, Snowy, his faithful canine companion and the grumpy Captain Haddock. The trio navigate through mystery, fast paced chases and even find time for some moments of humor.

ZOO-WEE-MAMA! He's Back!

If I had a dime for everytime I've been asked for a book "just like Diary of A Wimpy Kid", I'd be a very wealthy librarian. Well, my reader friends, the wait is over. Greg Heffley is back!

The long awaited sixth book in the hilarious Diary of A Wimpy Kid series was released yesterday, entitled Cabin Fever. Did you reserve your copy yet? In this latest chapter of slouchy Greg Heffley's middle-school life, he is trapped in house for a very long, and very frustrating snow day.

Hugo - The Movie

While at the movies recently, I came across a promotional poster for the upcoming 3D film Hugo based on Brian Selznick’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret. As much as I enjoyed the book, I’m looking forward to the movie, scheduled to open for the Thanksgiving vacation on November 23rd.

New Books This Week

We are constantly ordering new books in the children's room. I came across a few new books in our series collection that I think are great. I became a fan of "Agent Amelia" with her humorous character, as well as "Froggy Builds a Tree House" and a "Subway Story." We have so many books to choose from why not come in and make some of them your favorite.

Alv in Ho : allergic to dead bodies, funerals, and other fatal circumstances.

3 Apples award!

Have you noticed the little voting booth in the corner of our children's room?

The New York State 3 Apples award is held every year and children from pre-school to high school get to choose their favorite book (any book) to be the winner.

At the end of October, the votes are entered and the 15 most popular are chosen. The following April, children get to vote a second time from the list created from the first round.

Help Me Turn Over A New Leaf

News Flash! Autumn is here. Apparently it's a season that has something to do with leaves. I know this because:

1. I listen to everything (despite not having ears)

and...

2. I suddenly have a leaf.

Yes, I said a "leaf". Singular. Just one. My very own leaf. Now, I'm sure you're wondering why in a watery world does a library fish need a leaf?!!? Good question!

The answer is, I don't know. I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it. One day I woke up from a nap, poked my head through my comfy little barrel, and there was a big, green, oblong-floating thing stuck right to the inside of my tank! It's even bigger than me (but not nearly as colorful). I have spent the last month trying to get to the bottom of it (sometimes literally). Is it friend, or foe? I've swam around it. It does nothing. I've blown a few bubbles at it. Nada. I even jumped on it and tried to wrestle it to the bottom. Zip. Zero. I've got nothing, and I need some help.

Do you have any ideas? If so, I'd love to hear them (with my non-ears). Perhaps you're coming in for our Lego Club today. Or maybe you'll be visiting soon for storytime, Music of the Earth, or to take out your favorite book or DVD. Be sure to drop by my tank and give me a clue because until then, I am an utterly befuddled fish.

My First Graphic Novel

I finally broke down and read my first graphic novel. I know they are hugely popular, but I’ve never really been comfortable with the format. However, I came across Bake Sale by Sara Varon and I could not resist the overleaf of smiling cupcakes. What could be wrong with a book whose main character is not only named Cupcake but actually is a cupcake (complete with a cherry on top)! Cupcake owns a bakery (the Sweet Tooth) and plays in a band with his best friend, Eggplant, as well as Avocado, Pear, Egg and Potato (how does he find the time?). As you can surmise, the book is populated with all types of food (fresh as well as canned). Cupcake’s life struggles are realistic. He loves to bake and has big dreams, but while he works hard to fulfill them, he discovers that he misses out on the things he really enjoys. He gets tired and stressed. He has a great friendship with Eggplant and they always help each other out. The book is best described very much like the cupcakes I most enjoy – simple, yet surprisingly rich and satisfying. And, there are some wonderfully delicious-looking recipes in the back of the book – Cupcake’s specialties.

It's time for a new generation to meet The Muppets!

We all will have a new reason to look forward to the holidays this year!

While I know so many
people who shiver with excitement at the first chill of fall and rush to remove their woolly sweaters from their closets, I am a self proclaimed "summer person". Usually I dread this change of season, but this year I have a reason to rejoice with the rest of you cool weather fans.

The reason? Let me see, Kermit the Frog, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Rolf, Sweetums, Rizzo, Janis, Scooter...and who am I forgetting? Oh, of course! The very glamorous Miss Piggy!

Yes, this November after digesting Thanksgiving dinner, which usually takes me about a week, I will be rushing to the theaters to see "The Muppets".

While I am sure my young patrons recognize Jim Henson's brain children, not many are as familiar with them as my generation had been. It has been 12 years since the Muppets graced our big screens and if the previews are any indication they will be returning with their full glory.

This new film is to be written by television's Jason Segal who is a huge fan of the original films and I am pretty confident he will do justice to the revival of the franchise.

So let's get our children ready to meet "The Muppets!" If you haven't already come on down to the library and check out our DVD section where we have several Muppety discs to choose from including a few seasons of the original series, "The Muppet Show". If you don't I cannot be responsible for Piggy's reaction.

Dragons, penguins and cats, oh my!

It's been a fun-filled summer here in the Children's Room and we wrapped up the season with our Family Crafternoon. Frogs, fish, bats, apples, planes, beach balls, photo albums and much, much more were available as families dropped in to make a variety of items from our treasure trove of crafts.

A Librarian's Holiday

Not long after the last dot was placed on the chart, the last prize given out and the last certificate presented to another successful summer reader, this librarian took off for a much anticipated vacation – 2 glorious weeks in Italy.
The first week was spent in the little mountain town of Villa Santa Maria in the Abruzzo region:

We were able to enjoy all the activities of the festa –processions, nightly concerts on the piazza, and dazzling fireworks. And the food, of course, was phenomenal. But most importantly, we enjoyed the warm and wonderful company of family, who always make us feel welcome and loved.

We even made a new friend:

The second week, we went to Puglia (commonly referred to as the “heel” of Italy’s boot shape).
We stayed in a 250 year old trullo:

Don’t let the rustic exterior fool you, inside the accommodations are luxuriously comfortable.

We traveled around a bit, visiting Lecce with its beautiful Baroque architecture, Locorotundo, Fasano, Ostuni , the stunning beaches of Gallipoli, and the delightful trulli of Alberobello:

All were lovely, each with its own distinct character. On my last day, we visited the quaint, exquisite fishing village of Monopoli:

No vacation is complete without visiting at least one library and here I was not disappointed. In the Piazza Garibaldi, I stumbled upon the Biblioteca Communale of Monopoli, which is under renovation but still functioning. Although they were about to close, they graciously welcomed me in the children’s room to look around and take some photos:

I even came across some old friends:

A magnificent trip, but it’s always good to be back home.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn (Book Festival 2011, That Is)

Our summer may be drawing to a close, but that doesn't mean our wonderful, story-filled world has too. As a matter of fact, with September comes New York City's largest free literary event, the annual Brooklyn Book Festival!

This year's festival is scheduled for September 15-18 and is a great way for children families to meet the many popular and emerging authors they've experienced only in library books. Many booths at the festival include family-friendly programs such as read-alouds, crafts, photo ops and book signings. This year's list of children's authors includes some of our (and your) all time favorites like...Jon Scieszka, Mo Williems, Jacqueline Woodson, and many many more!

Be sure to visit the official website for all the details. Who knows? You may even catch a glimpse of your friendly neighborhood librarians there as well. :-)

Where Did Summer Go?

It just felt like we packed away our winter boots and pulled out our flip flops. Where did Summer go?

Here at the Syosset Library children's room we have just completed our summer reading program. What a huge turnout we had!!!!

A total of 7013 books were read this summer.Good job to all of our Syosset Kids!!!!

To end our Summer reading program we finished with a great balloon show called "Goowin's Balloowins" on Saturday, August 6th. The kids did an outstanding job on stage.

Road trip across these Weird United States!

Ah, summer vacation. Time for lemonade, a run through the sprinkler and road trips!

But I am not here to talk to you about your typical road trips to national parks or nearby cities. While those road trips are truly great and highly recommended, I am here to talk up a book with some of the strangest destinations you could possibly think of visiting. The best part? These are all real places and things you can actually visit!

Here are a few suggestions from the book:

Destination # 1:

The World's Largest Basket in Newark Ohio.

Look to your right. That is actually an office building made to look like a giant basket!

This is no joke, renowned basket maker, Dave Longaberger began his career making regular size baskets. Soon Dave found he was thinking bigger. Longaberger created a 30 foot model of an apple basket which is located in Frazeyburg Ohio.

In 1999, prior to his death, Dave Longaberger designed his masterpiece, an exact copy of his company's trademark Longaberger Medium Basket 160 times the size of its model! This giant basket came in the form of a 7 story office building which employs a workplace of about 500 people!

How do you like them apples?

Destination # 2:

Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska

England a little too far of a plane trip to see the real Stone Henge? Not to worry, artist Jim Reinders with the help of his very kind family has recreated the ancient monument in Alliance, Nebraska using used automobiles!

38 cars were positioned, some partially buried in pits about 5 feet deep, in order to mirror the actual proportions of Stone Henge which lies outside of London England.

Carhenge is actually also a memorial to Reinder's father who once resided on the farmland where the sculpture stands today.

Destination # 3:

The Giant Duck in Flanders, New York on Long Island

I must confess, this destination is not actually in the Weird America book, however it is the easiest of its type to travel to as it is right in our very own backyard!

This 20 foot tall, 30 foot long bird was designed by a duck farmer named Martin Mauer in Riverhead New York. Mauer had been tickled pink when he had visited California and seen oddly shaped buildings such as a Giant Coffee Pot.

In 1931, Mauer built The Duck and began selling eggs and livestock out of it as a shop. To this day The Duck is a favorite of Long Island residents. Why not take a Sunday with the family drive out east, stop at a few farm stands and visit our very own roadside oddity?

Cupcakes and Beach Balls

On Monday we held another one of our ever-popular Cupcakes and Crafts classes. The kids decorated beach-themed cupcakes using blue icing, Gummy Life Savers, Extreme Sour Belts, Teddy Grahams,and cocktail umbrellas. Check out some of their creations below:

Lets Party!!

Bump in the night!

Fireflies flicker beneath the blanket of a starry sky. The crisp smell of burning wood fills the cool night air. Children huddle around a campfire in anticipation of a good scare to send chills down their spines.

Its time for Campfire Tales!

While scary stories are not for everyone, the act of telling these tales around a campfire is an old tradition deeply rooted in folklore from all over the world!

For those brave ones who dare venture out in the night to tell these tales, Syosset Public Library has several books, varying in scariness and or silliness!

Of course another campfire tradition is sores! S'mores is a desert sandwich made when a roasted marshmallow is placed on a block of milk chocolate (the charred marshmallow melts the chocolate) between two graham cracker squares.

The first recorded s'mores recipe is attributed to The Girl Scouts sometimes in the early 1900's. However, for those of us who are unable to roast marshmallows, here is a modified s'mores recipe that preserves all the gooey deliciousness and saves the hassle of the campfire:

Miss Jessikah's S'mores without the Campfire:

1 Can of Chocolate Frosting (any brand will do.)

1 Can of Marshmallow Fluff.

1 Box of Plain Graham Crackers.

Break a cracker in half and smear the frosting on one side and the fluff on the other. Mash the two sides together and you've got s'mores, easy peasy!

The library is celebrating two very special birthday's this week. On Thursday, June 23, the library will mark its 50th anniversary! Be sure to check out the history of the Syosset Public Library and join the celebration by attending one of our special anniversary programs.

On Tuesday, June 21, we celebrated the birthday of our library fish, Gordon Bob Splash. He has been our loyal and friendly companion for a year now. He even blogged about his eventful first year in the Children's Room last week. His birthday was made complete with a party balloon and, of course, a cake (thank you Miss Rosemarie).

Happy Birthday to me, (Gordon Bob Splash)!

One year ago this month my lifelong dream of becoming more than just your average fish came true! One day I was just swimming around in some random pet store tank and the next... SPLASH! I was plopped down into a crystal clear tank in the beautiful surroundings of the Syosset Public Library's Childrens' Room. It has been a very fufilling and wonderful year for me.

First, I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify some nasty rumors that are being spread about me (this happens when you've reached fish celebrity status). I am NOT an impostor fish. I am the one, the only, the original library-fish extraordinaire, Gordon Bob Splash. Do not believe everything you've heard your parents tell you about pet fish. With proper care (and lots of TLC), we can live longer than a few weeks....

I'd also like thank the many happy kids who stop by to say "hi" and smile at me each and every day. You might think I can't hear, being under water and all (and my lack of ears) but that is simply not true. I hear everything (yes... everything!). I can also see how excited everyone is about the upcoming summer reading!

One World, Many Stories is this summer's reading club theme and you can be sure that the childrens' room has planned some fantastic programs and adventures for you! Visit our newsletter online for details. Registration begins on June 20th for newborns up to to 5th graders. From crafts to storytime, from Lego club to campfire tales, there's something for everyone. (There's even a cool summer reading club for teens and adults). Fun In the Library!

The unofficial kickoff to summer has begun! We hope everyone enjoyed their memorial day weekend along with this fabulous summer weather. After the winter we had this weather is well deserved! For those of you who find the weather to be a bit too hot you can always scoot on down to the library to cool down. Within the next week or two sign ups will begin for our fun filled summer programs in the Children's room.

In honor of the Syosset Library's 50th Anniversary, this summer we will be celebrating with fun programs and treats, and lets not forget our Summer Reading Registration June 20th. This years theme is "One World, Many Stories."

Visiting your not-so-local library

When you go on a vacation have you ever visited someone else's library?

A few weeks ago I went on a trip to Chicago to see a friend. On our way to Millenium Park, I noticed there was a train stop for the Harold Washington Library Center. I immediately asked my friend if we could take a look.

The Harold Washington Library Center is Chicago's central library. It was every bit as beautiful and iconic as other sights I had seen in the city, yet because it was a library, it felt like home.

This library is 9 floors high and the children's room boasts the largest collection of children's books in Chicago! In the center of the children's area is the famous "storybook dollhouse" where over 70 references to famous children's books are hidden delicately within.

The very upstairs floor is a beautiful room with trees and windows which gives a lovely area for studying.

So if you ever find yourself in the Windy City, make sure you do these things:

1. Taste some Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

2. Take a walk in Millenuim Park

3. Visit the Harold Washington Library Center

Due to popular demand, we held another one of our ever-popular Cupcakes and Crafts classes last week. We had a great turnout and the kids had a wonderful time decorating a pig cupcake as well as a bakery box to take it home in!

Parents need a night out too...Come to our Babysitting Job Fair!

This Sunday, May 15 from 12:30-2pm, the Syosset Public Library's Teen Space will be hosting a Babysitting Job Fair right here in the library!! Parents looking for local, responsible, and knowledgable babysitters need to look no further. This is a great opportunity for you to bring your children, and have them (as well as you) meet face to face with some potential babysitters.

Rest assured that all teen babysitters at the fair have completed a certified babysitting course offered here at the library as well. No RSVP is needed. The job fair is free. Simply stop in and visit and then, you can start planning a grown-up night out soon! :-)

Bark in the Park

In case I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m a big baseball fan. And a dog-lover, too. Just recently, I was able to combine these two passions in a very pleasant way. My husband and I were able to take Luca, our 6 year old chocolate Labrador, to his very first baseball game on Saturday, April 23rd, when the Mets hosted their 2nd Annual Bark in the Park. Luca made many new friends that day, both canine and human. He posed for a photo with Mets announcer and former pitching star Ron Darling. He participated in a Pup Rally and a dog parade all around the field. It was a thrill to see ourselves on the big screen! The Mets went on to win that day 6-4 over the Arizona Diamondbacks. While my husband and I are devout, unwavering Yankee fans, I think Luca might be partial to the Mets. After all, they graciously (and bravely) opened their doors so that some four legged fans could enjoy a day of fun:

Citi Field is a beautiful baseball park, one of my favorites. Its style is reminiscent of the old Brooklyn Dodgers’ stadium, Ebbets Field. As I was enjoying my day there, I was thinking of all the baseball parks I have been fortunate to visit—besides Citi Field and the cathedral of baseball, Yankee Stadium, I have been to Fenway Park in Boston, Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Camden Yards in Baltimore, Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Anaheim Stadium and Doubleday Field at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. It's amazing how much American history is tied to its national pastime. There’s a wonderful children’s book about baseball fields: Ballpark: The Story of America' s Baseball Fields by Lynn Curlee. So when you’re not playing baseball or watching baseball at your favorite stadium, you might want to check it out:

Spring Break

It's back to school today after a fun-filled spring break week at the Syosset Library. Last week was a big hit filled with activities and programs for all kids to enjoy and participate in. From movies, to making art with Michael Albert and of course we can't forget our little newborns for Stomp it up! To end the break, we had a full house attend the comical and lively magic show by Jim McClenahan.
I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break!!

Our next kick off program will be our summer reading club. It will be here before you know it!!!!!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day, Syosset Kids! As I am sure you have all recently heard "green is the new black!"

While that statement may confuse you, what it basically means is that "going green" a term used to describe many actions we can take to protect our environment has become extremely popular these days. How does this relate to the color black then?

Saying that something is "the new black" is a funny saying to indicate the sudden widespread popularity of something. And as mentioned above, keeping the environment safe has been a hot topic recently. So therefore I say once again, "green is the new black".

Though as children, it may seem that this is beyond you, there are many things you can do in order to "go green" easily on your own and begin living life in tune with the environment.

You can check out a book which gives you ideas on art projects which can be made out of recycled materials, for instance. Did you know that used egg cartons and milk cartons make great materials for budding artists? In fact, when I was younger and "going green" wasn't on the tip of every one's tongue as it is today, I used to make tons of great things re-using household materials. I even used egg cartons as a palate for paints! Sometimes I would put soil in them and plant flowers, which brings me to another great way you an go green.

With the spring weather right around the corner, why not ask your parents if you can try gardening? If you plant flowers, they provide food for insects such as bees who pollinate them and in turn make honey. Even planting a simple green leaved plant can be good for the environment in a small way. My brother once planted a seed in the backyard and it has now grown into a tree which towers well over 12 feet tall!

When cleaning out your closet make sure you donate old clothes instead of throwing them out. They may not fit you anymore, but there are sure to be people in need who can use them and it creates less garbage. You can find donation bins outside of many shopping centers. Clothing that is too worn to be donated can be cut up to make rags or can even be worn as gardening clothes!

Of course you can also encourage your parents to get reusable bags for the grocery stores instead of wasteful plastic, but what about when you go shopping for things other than food? There are companies that produce small portable bags which can be carried anywhere and used when you are shopping for anything from video games to the clothing you get to replace your donations with.

The Shot Heard 'Round the World

Today is my father’s birthday. He would have been 89 years old. Since I can no longer celebrate with him, I wanted to honor his memory by blogging about something he really enjoyed: Baseball and his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers. It is spring and baseball season is just beginning, so it seems the perfect time to highlight a book about a famous moment in baseball history: The Shot Heard ‘Round the World by Phil Bildner. It’s set in 1951, during the National League playoff series with the Brooklyn Dodgers against the New York Giants. From my Dad’s stories, I feel like I know all the players; even the places and street names are familiar to me. The language and illustrations bring you right into that time and place. And while the ending is sad (for the Dodgers and their faithful), it is still a thrilling time and the book captures that anticipation and excitement perfectly. I’ve heard so much about the Dodgers all my life, I’m sorry they don’t play in Brooklyn any more.

Happy Near Miss Day!

Did you know that today is Near Miss day? Why do we celebrate this holiday? That's a good question. On March 23, 1989 the earth was almost hit by an asteroid the size of a mountain! "The asteroid came within 500,000 miles of hitting the earth." If we were hit by this asteroid it would have left an enormous crater the size of Washington, D.C. WHEW, were we lucky!! But don't worry kids this doesn't happen very often and there is a European Space Agency (ESA) that is constantly trying to figure out how to avoid an asteroid.

Jack and Anime

Fans of Jack and Annie rejoice!

An announcement has been made that an animated movie based on Mary Pope Osbourne's "Magic Tree House" series is being developed in Japan! This "anime" version of Osbourne's well loved series is slated to be released in Japan early 2012.

With 45 books in the series and still going, there is little doubt that the film will make it to our shores.

While it is still unknown how many books in the series the film will cover, the teaser art above suggests it will start from the beginning with "Dinosaurs Before Dark."

I will post more information as it becomes available.

Wednesday, March 2 marked the 107 anniversary of the birth of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to most as Dr. Seuss. In celebration of the author, fourteen years ago, the day was also designated "Read Across America Day". According to the National Education Association, Read Across America Day "is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss".

We here in the Children's Room joined the celebration by donning our very own Cat in the Hat hats!

Ebooks for Kids - Go On and Take A Tumble!

Ebooks and ebook readers are all the rage these days. Although we all love to sit down and read with a book in our hands, it's also great to mix up reading with something interactive and fun. Let me introduce you to Tumble Books.

Simply put, Tumble Books provides young readers with animated and talking story books, graphic novels, and non-fiction books online. The narration, highlighted text, sounds, music, and full pictures add to this fantastic and fun way to read! It's great for visual learners or reluctant readers who dread traditional reading. Kids can create their own playlists and favorites to customize Tumble Books for themselves. All they need is their library barcode to sign in and start reading.

Books are available in several languages as well. Tumble Books also offers a wide range of literacy based activities including online puzzles and games, Book TV, language learning, read-a-longs, and more. Their collection of books and reading resources is constantly growing!

Chinese Calligraphy

Come join us for an introduction to Chinese Calligraphy! This Thursday, February 24, an instructor from the Long Island Children's Museum will be running a workshop from 2-3 PM and 3:15 - 4:15 PM for children Grades 1-5 ($3 fee). Explore the development of writing in Eastern culture and discover the art of beautiful Chinese writing. Learn the six basic strokes used to form Chinese characters and use a graph to place the letters. Create your own scroll using elegant brushes, Sumi ink, rice paper and authentic seals. There's still room in both sessions, so if you are looking for something fun to do this Presidents' Week, stop by the Children's Room to register.

"In February it will be my snowman's anniversary..."-Maurice Sendak

February, a typically cold month of the year in our area. A month where we sit inside, sipping soup and cocoa. While it is not uncommon to see snowmen/women/children/animals on our lawns during this month, you may be interested to know that the month of February almost did not exist!

Our Calendar is based on a model set up by the ancient Romans. Originally, March was the first month of the year.

In this 10 month calendar model, some months had 20 days while others could have as many as 35!

Eventually the months of January and February were added to the calendar which divided a solar year (which consists of 365.242 days) into 12 months, thus making the amount of days in each a bit more consistent with each other. February, however remained quite short. At one point it was always 29 days, however one of those days were taken and added on to the length of August.

However, because as stated above, a year technically runs 365.242 days, an extra day, leap day is added to the calendar every 4 years to make up for that extra .242 of a day. Leap day was given to February making the shortest month of the year, also the only month to contain an extra day every four years.

While February remains the shortest month of the year, it has many holidays.

Some of which include:

Ground hog's Day: February 2nd.

Chinese New Year: February 3rd.

Valentine's Day: February 14th.

Two of our Country's most revered Presidents where born in February. Abraham Lincoln was born February 12th and George Washington on February 22nd. Because of this we celebrate President's day on the third Monday of February.

February's official flower is the violet (though in some places it is the primrose).

If you were born in February, your birthstone is an amethyst.

Not bad at all for a month that almost never existed.

Girl's Best Friend: A Maggie Brooklyn Mystery by Leslie Margolis

In anticipation of last week's snow storm, I had brought home several books. One being Girl's Best Friend, which attracted me for 3 reasons: 1. It's a mystery (my favorite genre); 2. It's set in Brooklyn (one of my favorite boroughs) and 3. There's an adorable dog on the cover (which supersedes all the other reasons). I thoroughly enjoyed the book in which Maggie is a an enterprising 12 year old who combines a dog-walking business with solving mysteries. One of the mysteries is that dogs are disappearing all over Park Slope. She is supported by an eclectic cast of characters: her crush, Milo; her ex-BFF Ivy, her new BFF Lucy, her twin brother Finn and all her neighboors in the Park Slope brownstone where she lives with her family. Maggie is realistic, funny and likeable and the story kept the pages turning. I look forward to more titles in this series.

And finally, I would like to congratulate my little cousin Matteo who won the bookmark contest for his Kindergarten class out in Miller Place. Knowing that I would appreciate this, his mother sent me a copy of the winning entry. It's hard to read but it states: Books are Family Fun!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

The library will be closed today due to the storm but we will reopen tomorrow.

Are You Game?

Now that we have had our first official blizzard of the season, I am sure many of us will be spending more time indoors as the wind blows and the snow piles up.

While video games are a great way to pass the time during bad weather, board games are also a great way to spend the day AND they can be played by your whole family!

Here are a few classics:

CHUTES AND LADDERS: AGES 3 +

A great game which can only be won by "climbing" to the top of the board. The board can be climbed by using "ladders" which can be used if a "good deed" is done. If a "bad deed" is done, however you run the risk of being placed in front of a chute (slide) and going back down to the bottom of the board. Good and bad deeds are depicted on the board as a cheerful playground scene. They player moves around the board by rolling a die. Also, the game is considered a great way to introduce higher numbers to younger children.

MONOPOLY: AGES 8+

Monopoly is a game for the patient and savvy. This game was created in the mid 1930's during the Great Depression. It is a great way to learn a little about economics, money management and an even better way to spend an afternoon with a cup of cocoa and family. Make room for friends because the game can be played with up to 8 people!

A snowy afternoon is a perfect time for a game of Monopoly as some games are known to last several hours!

Since its creation, several novelty versions of Monopoly have been sold, such as Star Wars Monopoly, Super Mario Brothers Monopoly, The Simpson's Monopoly and so on.

TWISTER: AGES 6+

For those who would like to be a little more physical with their board game (as a warm up for all the sledding you will be doing!) Twister is a challenging game which makes its players the pieces on the board!

Spin a dial to see where you are supposed to put your hands and feet and try not to fall, as up to four other people can play at the same time!

Giggles are guaranteed.

Some people like to stay home for the holidays. Not me! I am looking forward to some R & R along with some TLC at Miss Amy's house this week. I plan to just kick back and relax and read some favorite books. You can bet that I will miss my many library friends (especially the little smiley ones). There are some terrific events going on while I'm gone, such as the Snowman Clock Craft and a showing of Toy Story 3 in our theater. I'll be back after the New Year and you can bet I'll be ready for our great programs starting up again such as our weekly storytimes and Lego club.

While I'm away, please be sure to stop in and say hi to my favorite librarians. I know they are going to miss me terribly. Happy Holidays!

Snowmen

Snowmen are one of winter's highlights. Always a favorite of mine, they are by far the most frequent ornament on my Christmas tree. A snowman sits on top of my desk and smiles at me all year round. As I look at him, I began to wonder about the origins of these creatures. In a fit of curiosity, I went to my computer and began to search: Who made the first snowman? Where? How did the classic shape come to be? Why a carrot for a nose? and other equally significant questions. I found-----not much. However, I did come across an interesting book--The History of the Snowman by Bob Eckstein. It is not a children's book nor does our library own it, but despite these two drawbacks, we can still appreciate the delightful cover:

Winter Fun

Winter flurries, windy days, hats, scarves and gloves, all mean old man winter and the holidays are here! So lets celebrate these upcoming winter months with fun indoor activities. You can find crafts and baking recipes in books or on websites that can be made with materials found laying around the house.

One simple craft you can make together with friends or family is: Salt Crystal Snowflake.

Material needed:
*Hot Water
*A cup or mug
*Salt
*Thick black paper
*Paintbrush

Boil water and pour it into a mug. Add a couple of teaspoons of salt and stir with the paintbrush until it dissolves. Keep adding a teaspoon of salt until you start to notice it no longer disolves and the salt crystals are on the bottom of your mug.

Paint your snowflake.

(Tip: Each time you dip your paintbrush in the salt water be sure to stir that way your salt crystals don't sink to the bottom of the cup.)

Leave your artwork to dry overnight.

3D or not 3D?

3D or not 3D. This is the question we have faced when going to the movies.

For nearly a year almost every movie, especially children's films have been released with the 3D option.

Now 3D isn't for everyone. Personally I am not a fan of the recent fad. It gives me a headache and the glasses are uncomfortable! However, I can see the appeal to the masses, especially to younger movie goers who are enchanted by the images that seem to pop off the screens right before their eyes!

What many of todays newborn 3D enthusiasts may not realize is that filmmakers have been experimenting with 3D technology for over 100 years!

Now as we all know, 3D is a sophisticated optical illusion in which the images on the screen specially prepared to be used with special specs trick us into thinking we see images coming off the screen. However, as long as photography has existed the urge to perfect this trick of the eye has been close behind.

By the end of the 1840's a British gentleman by the name of Sir David Brewster perfected a technique called, "stereoscopy" which had been coined by a British physicist Sir Charles Wheatstone. This technique allowed photographs to appear three dimensional to the naked eye.

Let it be known that Sir David Brewster also invented the kaleidoscope.

The 3D glasses appeared on the movie scene in 1915 with the invention of something called, "anaglyph technology". In 1922, "The Power of Love" was the very first 3D film to be shown to a public audience.

The 1950's and were also a very popular time for 3D movies, however the majority of the films shown during this time period, however most of these films were scary movies or monster movies! Who would want to see a big scary monster coming at them? Unless of course this was a monster from Pixar's Monster's Inc.

The popularity of 3D seemed to fade in the 1960's when a new technology called, "Space Vision 3D" was released. Although many audiences flocked to the theaters to experience Space Vision, it did not live up to its name with the critics who gave it a big thumbs down. Still, Space Vision prevailed with a few movies here and there throughout the 70's and 80's, once again, these were mainly scary movies.

The 1990's brought about the IMAX 3D films that are similar to what we see today. Until the mid 2000's though, the majority of these movies were nature documentaries only shown in special theaters equipped to play them. Nowadays this is no longer necesary and 3D films can be seen at any theater.

Looking ahead, it appears that 3D will be available even closer than your local movie theater. 3D televisions are already available in stores. While I doubt everyone will be interested in this form of entertainment (you would still have to wear the glasses at home) it appears that the long history of 3D has quite a few chapters left before we close the book.

Extreme Makeover - Storytime Room Edition

Yellow? Green? What is with all that color? Our storytime room has gotten a makeover. Gone is the drab, boring cream color. Our librarians mulled over hundreds of color choices and we all finally agreed upon Viking Yellow and Lucky Charm Green and wow are they bright and cheery!!

Better yet, sign up Storytime for Tots or Preschool Storytime and spend a fun-filled 30 minutes in the room each week while listening to stories, watching a filmstrip and singing and dancing! I can see! I can see! That's right. Not only did my tank get a fabulous upgrade the past few months including a brand new filter and a cool swim-through log, but my water is super-sparkly clear. Did you notice how colorful my fins are? I look marvelous! Of course, I always knew that kids were having fun here at the library, but for a while there things were a bit hazy. Now, (thanks to Miss Amy), I can clearly see all the wonderful things happening in the Children's Room.

First, I saw our librarians helping kids with their school research assignments and projects. They are especially helpful with book reports (my least favorite) since they seem like they've read almost everything. And when the schoolwork is done, I've seen our kids create some fantastic crafts such as the Egyptian arti-fact craft, and Lego club creations. I just peeked at our winter newsletter and you wouldn't believe what's in store during those cold and drab winter months. Things will really be heating up in the Children's Room. I can't wait!

Today is Cliché Day! For those of you who don’t know what that is, here’s a definition:
an expression that has been used so often it loses its freshness and meaning.

We all use clichés from time to time (see!), they can be fun! Try to use as many as you can today. You'll be surprised how many you know. A word to the wise: to make a long story short, don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. You never know unless you try—that is, if you can get a word in edgewise….

And a huge thank you to our wonderful teen volunteers who helped decorate the Children’s Room for Halloween with their delightful pumpkins!!

Almost Here....

It's almost here, the fifth book of the series "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." Everyone fell in love with Greg Heffley after reading the first book from the collection, and the author Jeff Kinney just keeps bringing Greg back for more laughs and adventures. As we await for the release of this new book I spent some time on the website of Diary of a Wimpy Kid (http://www.wimpykid.com/. )I discovered neat information about the author and how he came up with "Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The website also has the new hit song from Rowley's idol Joshie called, "Joshie's Says." Take time to listen to it and let us know what you think. I thought it was very catchy!

Promoting reading through comic books!

On October 8-10th, the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, hosted the 2010 New York Comic Con. This was co-hosted alongside the New York Anime Festival. As you can see in the picture to the left, the event drew a large crowd of comic book, film, video game and anime entusiasts. I was one in the attendance of over 100.000 people!

While the convention is a great place to celebrate fandom in all of its glory, I got a few unexpected suprises.

First, I was able to snag a signed copy of the graphic novel edition of Rick Riordan's, "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief". Let me tell you that the artists did a phenominal job of bringing Percy and his friends to life on everyone of the beautifully colored pages. I also browsed by the booths where several well known comic book and graphic novel artists sat, including David Petesen, the creator of one of my favorite juvenile series, "Mouse Guard".

When escaping the crowds of fans often dressed as their favorite superhero or cartoon character, I found myself attending panels with various artists and writers. At the end of each panel the speakers allowed fans to comment or ask questions.

Within the Q&A section of the panels I was stunned to hear how many people thanked the artists and writers for helping them learn to read through their works. Several originally non-english speaking attendees even explained that through some of the comic books and related animated series, they were not only able to learn to read and write english, but also to speak it.

Supplementing these nods of thanks were several panels which stressed the importance of graphic novels in libraries.

I cannot think of any better proof than the testimonials mentioned above.

As a Columbus Day treat for the out-of-school Syosset kids, we invited guys from Mad Science to provide some sizzling excitement by demonstrating safe and scientific fun. Children had the opportunity to come on stage and assist the scientists with various experiments while learning about the properties of fire and dry ice.

A Loveable Diversion

My beloved and favorite uncle passed away this week; he was 92. I have only the happiest memories of him. He was a wonderful man, full of life, love and fun. He was very proud of his service to his country during World War II, where he was a member of the Army Air Corps (which later became the Air Force). I was trying to find a way to honor his memory when I came across a children’s book, Tail-End Charlie by Nick Manning and Brita Granstrom, about an RAF airman during World War II. Although the book is told from the British point of view, I’m sure the experiences are very similar. Reading the book and looking at the photos, I was reminded of my uncle’s stories, especially the strong bonds among the crew. I just know my uncle would have loved it.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn!!

Another relaxing Summer season has passed and today we offically welcome Autumn. Mornings are beginning to get cooler, the days are getting shorter and of course another exciting school year has begun. Living in New York, we are lucky to experience the change of seasons every year. Each season brings along different and exciting things to do and experience. During the season of Fall we can see the leaves begin to change colors, you can go apple and pumpkin picking, go through fun corn mazes, and of course there's the celebration of Halloween and Thanksgiving.

As the seasons change so do the displays in our children's room. We update each display with neat and interesting books.

We look forward to seeing you this season.

Ahoy! sprogs o' Syosset!

Ahoy there young mateys! I am practicing for the celebration of one of the silliest holidays in observance. I speak of course about, "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", which falls on September 19th!

What? You say you have never heard of "International Talk Like a Pirate Day?"

Well sit starboard down and I will tell you t'tale which began all t' way aft in 1996!

(Translation: Well sit right down and I will tell you the tale that began in 1996.)

Two friends named John Baur and Mark Summers (Ol' Chumbucker and Cap'n Slappy, in pirate speak.) decided over a game of racquetball that it would be fun to start their own holiday in which the two friends could only speak in "pirate lingo." They chose September 19th as the date, and began to observe it as an in-joke between friends.

Then, on a whim the two decided to send a letter about their made up holiday to Dave Barry, an American humorist who wrote for the Miami Herald. Barry liked the idea so much that he promoted it and the holiday really caught on. Of course, I like to think of it as Barry's inspiration for his fantastic children's novel, "Peter and the Starcatchers", the first in a series of prequels to Peter Pan, featuring one of literature's most infamous pirates, Captain James Hook!

The book is well worth reading.

So how does one celebrate this day? Well in short it is simple. Replace some or all of your normal everyday lingo with "pirate language."

So instead of saying, "hello" to your friends on this day it would be appropriate to address them, "Ahoy mateys!"

"Check it out" would be, "Avast!"

"Yes" would become, "Aye!"

And to show your enjoyment of talking like a pirate one can simply let our a hearty, "Arrrr!"

If you would like some more help with a few every day phrases, Ol' Chumbucket and Capn' Slappy have prepared a "Pirate-to-English" translator , which can change any sentence into "Pirate Speak."

Chumbucket and the Capn' have also prepared the following website specifically designed to guide young buccaneers and their parents through the many ways they can celebrate, "International Talk Like a Pirate Day."

Crime Fighting Lunch Lady!

There are so many reasons kids love going back to school...NOT! Thankfully there are authors, like Jarrett Krosoczka, who draw on their memories of school days and transform the mundane into hilarious, laugh-out-loud reads.

Lunch ladies (along with librarians, I might add) are a good target for school humor. I can't imagine why though (wink wink)... The Lunch Lady graphic novel series by Krosoczka introduces readers to a secret crime-fighting school lunch lady. She's cool. She's clever. And she's armed with a lunch tray laptop!

If I Was King of the World

I can’t hear the phrase “king of the world” without thinking of Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. However, when I was looking around for something interesting to blog about, I came across this wonderful website. The King of the World project was created by Jack Morgan and Tabitha Bazely who asked 300 school children from Kindergarten through Grade 8 how they would answer the profound question: What would you do if you were king/queen of the world? The answers came in the form of art, writing and video. The children’s responses are uplifting and entertaining. It cheered me greatly; hope it does the same for you.

Fun Things To Do In August

I Scream, you scream!

On a hot summer's day is there anything better than a nice cold scoop of ice cream?

The answer is, yes! Two nice cold scoops of ice cream!

Through the years I have had so many different, "favorite" flavors of ice cream. Once upon a time, it was coffee flavored. Then it was chocolate peanut butter, then it was mint chocolate chip, then I just went for plain old vanilla with hot fudge on top, then it was chocolate chip cookie dough, THEN...oh you get the idea.

Once upon a time ice cream was not available in the United States! The first recorded instance of the desert being served on our shores was in 1744 when a gentleman wrote about eating this treat at a banquet prepared by the then governor of Maryland, Thomas Bladen. Vanilla ice cream is said to have been introduced by Thomas Jefferson after a visit to France. Jefferson brought the recipe home with him and the rest is American history!

Many people believe ice cream was created in China when some people decided to mix yak's milk with water ices! No one is quite sure when the Chinese started making ice cream, but Marco Polo brought their recipes back to Italy in the 13th century. At some point someone realized that the treat might taste better with cow's milk.

From that point on many adventurous inventors have tried their hands at improving on what many believe is the perfect desert. For instance, did you know that the ice cream pop was created when someone decided it might be a fun idea to combine the deliciousness of an Eskimo Pie with the fun of a lollipop? This was called the "Good Humor" bar, and was first enjoyed by the public in 1921.

Ice Cream also comes in many more flavors than ever before! Some are undeniably indulgeant such as Ben and Jerry's aptly named, "Chubby Hubby", which consists of fudge covered, peanut butter filled pretzels, in malt vanilla flavored ice cream, with fudge and peanut butter ripples.
If that doesn't sound too strange for you, than how about Lobster flavored ice cream? If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, you needn't worry. You would need to travel to Bar Harbor, Maine to try it.

What is the most unusual flavor of Ice Cream which I have tried, you ask? Green Tea ice cream is a refereshing twist on the treat. It is more readily available than Lobster flavored, and has an Asian influence which seems so very appropriate given ice cream's Asian origins.

Hazy, Lazy, Fishy Daze of Summer

I overheard Nadine say that it's Week 6 of summer reading. Up until last week, I saw a lot of excellent things happening in the library. Lately, I haven't seen as much. Things have been a bit...well...hazy. I'll explain about the haze later, but first let me tell you what I have seen...

Summer Reading has been in full swing. There's been raffle prizes and colorful stickie-dots, slap bracelets and beach balls, and lots and lots of smiling kids (some with fake mustaches) reading lots and lots of books!! As a matter of fact, it's been 4,032 books so far. Outstanding! There's also been tons of great programs like Malibu Tile Craft, Lego Club, Story Time, Baby Boogie, and Fishy Backpack (my favorite) with more programs every week. It is really something to see here in the Children's Room....

Ehem...which brings me to my recent issue "seeing"... Well, many of you have noticed that my tank looks a bit hazy. My water has taken on a peculiar green hue making it difficult for me to see out. It's also giving me bit of a headache. :-( Amy and Catherine have worked very hard to clean my tank, replace the filter, and change the water, but still I remain in a hazy state. Hmmm.... I can't figure it out. If anyone is a fishy-expert and might have advice on how to enhance my view, please stop on by and let one of the librarians know. They are taking suggestions!

Ramona and Beezus

At last! Ramona Geraldine Quimby is in the movies. Ramona and Beezus, the film version of Beverly Cleary’s popular book, Beezus and Ramona, will be released this Friday in theaters. I’ve been a Beverly Cleary fan since forever. I always remember my sister bringing home her books for me from the school library. Being a little sister, I particularly identified with Ramona. I love this photo from the movie. Ramona fans will notice that she is wearing her famous red rubber boots!

Summer Reading

We are in our third week of Summer Reading at the library and we have had a great turnout with sign ups. Last year the children of Syosset read over 6663 books! We hope to beat that number this summer!

You can also find fun and exciting programs this summer at the library. Come visit us or keep a look out for the Syosset newsletter for registration dates. Our classes fill up quickly so don't hesitate! We still have space available in our "School of Fish Stamp Art", and for the little ones we still have room in "Our Special Time."

The summer reading list for children entering middle school in September is also available in our children's room. So if you want to get a head start on your school's reading requirements come in and ask for the reading list.

As the 4th of July weekend draws near we all begin to feel a little more patriotic. Some of us celebrate with a pic-nic in the park. Others may enjoy a BBQ with family. One thing we can all count on is when we look at the darkened sky that evening we will all see glorious fireworks in red, white, blue and just about any other color imaginable.

I myself like to begin my morning on the 4th by watching this little video from Muppet Studios. If the patriotic chickens don't get you clucking along happily, then you may as well hang out in the balcony with The Muppet Show's house curmudgeons, Waldorf and Statler.

Well, folks... it seems as if I've been named. There were lots and lots of suggestions with every name from from Rainbow to Fishy. Our wonderful judges decided that since I am such a serious fish, I needed a serious name.

They chose to name me Gordon-Bob Splash...or Mister Gordon-Bob Splash (I am a formal fish and this is a library after all). I like it. It feels good.

Thanks to all you wonderful name-givers out there, especially my friends who came up with Gordon-Bob Splash! It's a sensational name! I really feel like I belong. Happy swimming (and reading)!

Something's Fishy Here....

Wow. What a totally bizarre week I've had! One minute I was in a teeny-tiny glass bowl and then suddenly.... kerplunk! I dove head first into the most beautiful, most colorful, roomiest tank I could have ever imagined! I have no idea where I am, but there's a treasure chest and some big green leaves I like to hide in. Outside my luxurious tank I see happy, smiling faces, a palm tree, and lots and lots of.. well... I think they're called books.

It is now Day 3 here in my new digs and it looks as if I'm here to stay. I sure hope so!! I love it! The only thing left that I need is a name. A few of those nice, smiling ladies at the desk call me, "you-who" and "fishy-fish", but those aren't real names. I want a real good fish name and I hope some of the little people who've come to look at me can help pick one for me. There's a jar that reads "Name Our Fish", so I guess there will be lots to choose from!

Well, I'm hungry so I'm going to search for some fish food around here. Miss Amy is very attentive to my fish needs.

Make a Splash—READ! Summer Reading Club

Monday, June 21st is the start of our summer reading club (it also happens to be the last week of school but who’s thinking about that?). This year our theme is Make a Splash—Read! We have all our usual fun features including prizes, raffles, color dots, certificates plus some new items, too! Use your sleuthing skills for our scavenger hunt and win a special prize from our treasure chest! Use your imagination and artistic talent and enter our bookmark contest! We are all ready for a wonderful summer reading club, all we need is YOU! Please take some time out of your busy summer and come join anytime beginning Monday, June 21st. And check out some of our fun summer programs, too.

Parents: We have expanded our program this year to include babies and toddlers. It's called the Wee Read Together Club and it is just enough to start our youngest patrons on a path to a lifelong love of reading. Come in and ask about it.

Video gaming has come a long way since Mario Brothers and Sonic The Hedge Hog. Today, games have been created to fit all age groups. They range from interactive fun and learning games for the younger audiences such as Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer, and Max and Ruby to action hero games for the more mature audiences like Batman and Superman that involve fun missions and tricks. The game world is expanding with new games everyday for audiences to enjoy!

At the Syosset Public Library we try to meet the interests of all of our young patrons. We have a growing collection of fun video games in our Children's Room. Our collection is made up of various games for Playstation, XBOX,

Curious Gardens

One of my favorite books published in 2009 was The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. In it, a young boy named Liam discovers a hidden garden and with careful tending spreads color throughout his gray and dreary city. The hidden garden happened to be an abandoned elevated railroad and the author was inspired by a section of former elevated freight railroad on the lower west side of Manhattan known as the High Line.

The real High Line opened to trains in 1934, but as the decades passed and other modes of transportation developed, rail traffic dropped significantly. The last train ran in 1980. The tracks lay abandoned for years while various grasses, tree and shrubs thrived up there. In 1999, the non-profit “Friends of the High Line” was formed with the intent to preserve and reuse the land as public open space. Ten years later, their work paid off and a section of the line was opened as a city park.

Inspired by the book and nearly a year after it first opened, I finally had an opportunity to visit this now beautiful park and I encourage you all to do so as well. And, if you are looking to inspire a young gardener or looking for an environmental or a “green” book with a message or perhaps you are simply looking for a sweet story with charming artwork, check out The Curious Garden – you won’t be disappointed.

A summer of family movies sure to make waves!

The summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, go to a park, a beach, the pool and of course your local library for this year’s upcoming Summer Reading Club “Make a Splash, Read”! Of course there are many other things to get excited about when the sun climbs higher in the sky and the days grow longer. The summer means BBQ's with friends and family (YUM!), fireworks on the fourth of July (WOW!) and the numerous blockbuster movies that Hollywood has been saving to entertain us.
Here are a few children’s movies that should be fun for the whole family.

TOY STORY 3- June 18th marks the opening of Toy Story 3. The first two films in this series captured the hearts and imaginations of adults and children alike. Sure to display the same attention to detail and dynamite animation, Pixar brings the story of Woody, Buzz and their family of toys full circle when their beloved “child” Andy grows up and leaves for college! Donated to a Day Care center it seems as if Andy has no need of his childhood toys and the lively cast of characters must adapt to their heart breaking new situation. While the plot sounds depressing, sound bites of a young adult Andy declaring that Woody and Friends are more than just toys reassures us that our fondness for our childhood doesn’t have to fade when adulthood looms. I suspect a sweet reunion will bring this trilogy to a worthy close, after all how can Andy forget all that his toys have meant to him?

THE LAS T A IRBEN DER- Opening July 2nd is THE LAST AIRBENDER, although most fans of the critically acclaimed animated T.V. series (and I am one of them) know the original title for the film was changed from, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” to avoid confusion with 2009’s blockbuster of a similar name. The story is set in a fantasy world where many of its inhabitants are gifted with the ability to “bend” the elements using martial arts skills based on various forms of Kung Fu. The story’s hero Aang is the last of the Airbenders, woken from an accidental hibernation which froze him in a glacier for 100 years. When Aang is discovered and rescued by two siblings (one of them a Waterbender) he realizes the world he had known has been destroyed as the nation of Fire and their Firebending armies have conquered and enslaved most of Earth and Water Nation and completely destroyed the world of Air. But Aang is more than just the last of the Airbenders, he is also the Avatar, a being with the ability to master all four elements and bring peace to the nations. While I have some personal concerns about the film as a fan of the original series, the special effects and martial arts look stellar. I also suggest renting the animated series from the library if you have not yet seen it.

DESPICABLE ME- Opening July 9th tells the story of Gru, a deplorable villain who lives with an evil lair hidden underneath his house in an unsuspecting suburban town. Gru has been plotting evilly to perform the greatest most evil heist the world has ever known; to steal the Moon itself from the sky. With the help of his small army of loyal minions, a few freeze rays and an evil laugh it seems nothing could stop Gru from his sinister aspirations. Nothing but a trio of orphans who see Gru as more than just a villain, but a potential father! Will Gru fulfill his wishes and carryout his fiendish plans or will he give in to Margo, Edith and Agnes and abandon his devious ways for a happy home life? With Steve Carell as the voice of Gru and smooth looking animation, this film’s giddy trailer looks like it will deliver the laughs and capture more than the Moon but the hearts of its audience.

RAMONA AND BEEZUS- Opening July 23rd is a welcome addition to this blog post as it is based on the popular book series by Beverly Cleary. The story follows grade school age, Ramona Quimby and her older sister Beezus (played by Selena Gomez) as they explore the trials and tribulations of sisterly love and sibling rivalry. Along with some of Cleary’s other characters such as Henry Huggins, this film looks like it will appeal to younger children, a solid “tween” audience and maybe even those adults who have been fans of Ramona since their own childhood. So if you are looking for a family film without the action and effects that summer brings, this could be just the ticket.

Of course these are only previews of some of the many child and family friendly films appearing on screens this summer. Will they live up to their hype? That is up to the audiences to judge. Don’t forget the Syosset Public Library also has a plethora of films in the children’s room available to rent and show on your own small screen. So if these are not your cup of tea there are plenty of choices from summers past to rent and watch indoors on a rainy day.

It's true! Non-fiction is not fake.

There's always this confusion when a youngster is confronted with my question, "Do you want fiction or non-fiction?" It's baffling to little minds (and some bigger ones too).

Non-fiction is not fiction. It is a true account of a person, place, thing or event. Fiction =fake. Non-fiction= Not fake. That's how I learned to remember it as kid.

I love to read non-fiction because I like learning new things or even just learning more about something I am interested in (like history). Luckily for me we've gotten a lot of new non-fiction (not-fake) books in here in the Childrens' Room. There is the True Stories series which includes The Story Behind Oil and The Story Behind Chocolate (yum!). There's the Community Connections How Did That Get To My House series which has different volumes on mail, telephone, internet, etc.. There's the Disaster Survivor series that explains the science of weather and natural disasters (cool!). There's Slim Goodbody's Life Skills that deals with bullying and social relationships. The subjects are endless and age ranges from young readers up through middle school.

But my favorite new series is titled Amazing Decades in Photos. (Ironically the catalog doesn't show the cover art photos so here it is on the publisher's website.) These volumes start with the 1900's and proceed decade through decade to 2000's. What I like most about them is that they cover a vast amount of events in 20th century history in a clear and concise way. Bonnie and Clyde. The Dust Bowl. Comic Books. It also has tons of amazing photographs!

Children's Book Week

Children’s Book Week all began with the idea that children’s books can change lives. In 1913, Franklin K. Matthiews, the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, began touring the country to promote higher standards in children's books (at the same time helping elderly people cross the street as well as other splendid things Boy Scouts do). He proposed creating a Children's Book Week, which would be supported by all interested groups: publishers, booksellers, and librarians. Children’s Book Week was established in 1919 and continues to this day.

I’ve been thinking about the books that I read and loved as a child. Books have always been a big part of my life—I remember walking with my mother to the bookmobile every week. They opened up wonderful worlds for a very shy, quiet child and introduced some remarkable people. They had the power to brighten bleak and lonely days. I’ve listed some favorites that are still on the shelves. And, just so you don’t think I’m stuck in the past, I’ve included an excellent recent title that I very much enjoyed:

It is traditional for many countries around the world to celebrate mother's day on the second Sunday of May. On this day we show our thanks to our mothers for their wonderful warmth and care. Whether it be a special gift made from the heart or one from a store, a homemade dinner or going out to a restaurant, we celebrate this special day by making mothers across the world feel special and loved. Why not include the Syosset library in your day of fun filled planning. Our mother's day display is filled with great read aloud books to share with mom, kid-friendly cookbooks to make a delicious treat, and coloring sheets to create a special piece of artwork just for mom. Into the WEIRD Book Yonder!

While standard tales of regular children behaving normally are popular staples of children's literature, every now and then I find myself wanting to read something a little...strange? Offbeat? Dare I say, WEIRD? While authors such as Roald Dahl, Lemony Snicket and Jon Scieszka are known for their outlandish tales there are several other lesser known authors and titles that add some wild zaniness to the bookshelves.

Here is a short list of odd titles which are sure to leave you with a perplexed grin on your face.

Imogene's Antlers By David Small
When young Imogene wakes up one Thursday morning to find that she has grown a pair of antlers her mother finds the situation too weird to handle! But Imogene LOVES her antlers and all the wonderful things they bring into her life. Not your standard lesson in acceptance, Imogene's Antlers handles the "be yourself" theme in a unique way which will be sure to leave a smile on the faces of those reading and listening to David Small's beautifully illustrated tale.

You're a Bad Man, Mr. Gum! By Andy Stanton
Mr. Gum lives in a messy disgusting house, where he ignores his unmade bed, his manners and various facets of personal hygiene. In spite of all this, Gum maintains the most beautiful garden in town which is most likely due to the fact that an angry fairy whacks him on the head with a frying pan when he fails to maintain flowery perfection.
When Jake, a massive dog messes up his garden, Gum gets one too many whacks to the head causing mayhem beyond compare. This quick read will tickle your funny bone and define Mr. Gum as a villain you love to despise!

Alcatraz Versus The Evil Librarians By Brandon Sanderson
Alcatraz Smedry, like Harry Potter before him, was orphaned under mysterious circumstances. Further more, Alcatraz can't help breaking anything he comes into contact with, leaving him bounced from foster home to foster home. On his thirteenth birthday Alcatraz is visited by a man claiming to be his grandfather. Grandpa Smedry claims Alcatraz's destructive tendencies are a "talent" of which everyone in the Smedry family has a unique ability (Grandpa's talent is arriving late, his cousin Sing Sing's talent is tripping and falling etc.). Alcatraz discovers he is heir to a family legacy which are in constant combat with evil librarians who control all the information in the world. The plot is as ridiculous as it sounds and just as much fun. Alcatraz narrates the story from the future where he is considered a hero by the general public. The tale ends with a cliffhanger which leads to several just as wild sequels.

The Willoughbys By Lois Lowry
While Lemony Snicket's Baudelaire family lamented in their status as orphans, Lois Lowry introduces us to a family of children who will do anything to BECOME orphans. The Willoughby children, Timothy, Jane, Barnaby A and Barnaby B (they are twins), romanticize the orphan tales and wish to be rid of their self centered parents once and for all. The Willoughby parents are likewise, clamouring to be rid of their rotten children.
With the addition of a good old fashioned nanny (minus a spoonful of sugar) and a whole bunch of nods to Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lois Lowry crafts an outlandish tale, which parodies "penny dreadfuls" of eras past. Though the characters are not conventionally likable, the story is as enjoyable as a nice cold glass of sour lemonade on a hot day.

Toot! Toot! (Tooting Our Own Horn)

It's National Library Week! What? You didn't know? National Library Week is a yearly celebration designed to highlight the contributions of libraries and librarians. It might surprise you to know that I spent an enormous amount of time at the library in my life (shocker!) from storytime as a child, up through school and college. To me, libraries and their librarians have always seemed understated and humble. They were behind the scenes and the means to an end; be it a novel that I could escape into or a place to find the resources for an "A" on a term paper (hopefully).

Libraries are not typically vain places and librarians are in libraries to assist, guide, and help. Therefore, it seems a bit self-serving to blog about how great we are. That said, as a librarian, I cannot begin to tell you how many times I hear a patron say, "Wow, I never knew the library had/could do/would find that!" This got me thinking...

Did you know that if you need a directions, we'll print them out for you? Did you know that if we don't have a book (or a movie, music CD, sheet music, audiobook, etc..) we will try to find it for you, nearly anywhere in the world? Did you know that with your library card you can borrow passes to visit museums for free? Did you know that our children's librarians bake the cupcakes for our cupcake craft programs? Did you know that we pick and choose our favorite books to read to you at storytime? Did you know that we want you to get an "A" on that report too?

We want you to love your library as much as we do.

So perhaps a little gloating for a week once a year is just fine. Happy National Library Week!!

Play Ball!

It's April and baseball has begun! A lifelong fan, baseball is still my favorite sport. My team? The Yankees (although I do admit to an affection for the Mets). Baseball has always been very big in my family—my parents were huge Brooklyn Dodger fans. I love all things baseball--the history, the anecdotes, the players, the memorabilia. I love the slow pace that belies the excitement and tension every fan knows. And on this especially fine, summer-like April day, I'm really in a baseball kind of mood. I feel the warm sunshine, hear birds singing and lawn mowers humming and quite naturally my thoughts turn to....books! Consider the following lineup:

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bette Bao Lord

In 1947, a Chinese child comes to Brooklyn where she becomes Americanized at school, in her apartment building, and by her love for baseball.

We Are the Ship by Kadir Nelson

Using an "Everyman" player as his narrator, Kadir Nelson tells the story of Negro League baseball from its beginnings in the 1920s through the decline after Jackie Robinson crossed over to the majors in 1947.

Mighty Jackie: The Strike-Out Queen by Marissa Moss

In 1931, seventeen-year-old Jackie Mitchell pitches against Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game, becoming the first professional female pitcher in baseball history.

The Brooklyn Nine by Alan Gratz

Follows the fortunes of a German immigrant family through nine generations, beginning in 1845, as they experience American life and play baseball.

Since April is National Poetry Month, I've included some baseball poetry books:

Ernest L. Thayer's Casey at the Bat: A ballad of the Republic sung in the year 1888 illustrated by Christopher Bing

The immortal poem packaged in a scrapbook format; this should be read from endpaper to endpaper.

That Sweet Diamond by Paul Janeczko

A collection of poems, including "Before the Game," "Catcher Sings the Blues," "How to Spit," and "Double Play," capture the experiences of the game of baseball.

Perhaps I will see you around this summer, at Yankee Stadium (or possibly Citi Field).

Grow Your Own Garden Today!

Spring has finally arrived! There is already a faint smell of it in the air and the winter chill is slowly fading away. With Spring, comes the preparations for the growing season and lots of early planting, so why not start your own garden today. Just think of all the great yummy vegetables or beautiful flowers that will bloom within the next couple of months. You can also keep a garden journal for your garden that way you know what you planted this year, what your favorite plant is, and what you would do differently next year. Not your Grandmother's Fairy Tales

Fairy tales, like so many other types of classic literature, have shaped the way stories are told today. While the Walt Disney Company has taken popular Grimm's titles such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and added their own magic to the tales, many children's authors have done the same using popular story elements found in fairytales. Here are some of my favorites.

On ce Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris

A young man named Christian is found abandoned and raised by a kind forest troll. As Christian grows into a young man he falls in love with the unhappy Princess Marigold from afar. The two begin communication through messenger pigeons (or "p-mail") and Marigold tells Christian of her cruel Stepmother, the evil Queen who is plotting to dispose of Marigold and her kind father the King.

The story is full of comedy, romance and adventure and is highlu recommended. There is even a sequel, "Twice Upon a Marigold" which revists the characters and the fun.

The Key to Rondo by Emily Rodda

A fun adventure story which follows the story of two opposites.

Mild and responsible Leo Landlanger inherits an enchanted music box from his eccentric aunt. His impulsive outcast of a cousin, Mimi breaks the rules set for playing the music box they are pulled into the world of Rondo, where THEY are the fairy tales. When the evil Blue Queen kidnaps Mimi's dog Mutt, the cousins must work together to discover who they can trust and how to get home from Rondo.

With a nod to The Wizard of Oz and many other fairy tales and nursery rhymes, Rodda takes her readers on a fun ride which will leave them clamouring to return to Rondo as soon as the last page is turned. Luckily the second book, The Wizard of Rondo is already on the shelf, so they won't have to wait too long.

The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley

Daphne and Sabrina Grimm go to live with their grandmother Relda only to discover they are decendents of The Brothers Grimm! Even more exciting is when the sisters realize that all the characters from the Fairy Tales (called the Everafters) live in their Grandmother's neighborhood!
But all is not starlight and fairydust in their new home. Someone has unleashed a horrible giant upon the town and it is up to Daphne and Sabrina to solve the mystery. Several sequels follow.

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George

While Beauty and the Beast is a well known fairy tale, "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" is a lesser known, "sister tale" of sorts. " Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow", takes this tale and fleshes it out. A young girl without a name is taken to an enchanted kingdom of ice where a white bear promises her family will find wealth if she stays as his guest. As the girl stays she finds herself endeared to the Bear and befriends the many enchanted servants in the castle. However she soon discovers that she is the key to breaking a spell which holds her companions captive. I especially love this tale because it features a young lady who rescues her prince! Check out the authors other books as well.

Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale.

While everyone knows the story of the girl with the long hair waiting for a prince to climb it, this graphic novel takes the fairy tale and sets it in the Wild West! Rapunzel had been raised in luxery by the evil Mother Gothel. When she discovers Gothel had kidnapped her from a simple peasant woman, Rapunzel rebels causing Gothel to punish her by locking her in a high tree. Not one to sit and wait for her prince to come, fiery Rapunzel escapes boldly learning to use her long braids as lassos. She meets up with Jack (of Beanstalk fame) and the two of them embark on a fast paced adventure where they use their skills to defeat Gothel and rescue Rapunzel's mother and the townsfolk who have been terrorized by Rapunzel's captor for years. And yes, fans of Jack, there is a sequel!

National Craft Month
