Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

On Friday, March 2nd we celebrate the birthday of one of our beloved children authors, Theodore Seuss Geisel also known as "Dr. Seuss!"

A great way to celebrate is going to the movies to see "The Lorax" which is based on his 1971 children's book.

The Lorax is about a 12 year old boy who searches for the one thing that will help him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.” -Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

They Might Be a Gigantic Hit with Young Audiences!

For just about 30 years, the American "alternative" rock band known as, "They Might Be Giants" has delighted their audiences with wonderfully catchy tunes and bouncy lyrics with an almost cartoonish quality.

However, for the last few years, TMBG has turned their energy towards producing children's albums! This is of course great news to any parent who has had their fill of Raffi.

Not only is the music great, but the songs have a casual educational inclination which strays from being preachy.

Come in and check out an album and be prepared to sing along to favorites, such as "Why does the Sun Shine?" and new ones like, "The Balad of Davy Crocket".

Lonely Books

With so many wonderful books to choose from here in the Children's Room a few are destined to be "lonely". What are lonely books? "Lonely books are really great books that no one has read for a while. Sometimes their covers are not very interesting. Sometimes they get overlooked because they are not shiny and new. Sometimes they just don't catch anyone's eye."

The Children's Librarians have been selecting a bunch of excellent, albeit lonely, books from the shelves and putting them on display outside our computer room. Next time you're in the library, pick up a lonely book (just remember not to judge a book by its cover) and discover a great story that you otherwise might have overlooked.

Whether you want to celebrate a first kiss or first love, you can find more books to love here in the Children's Room.
If you'd like to share the love this month, why not bring the family and come on down for our Family Crafternoon on Friday, February 24th from 2-4pm? If you're 3 years and over, you are welcome to drop in and make a special craft together, while supplies last. We promise you'll find something you love at your library.
