Just Imagine...

"Imagine a place...
where you bend and sway,
leap and land,
right where a story begins." - From Imagine A Place, by Sarah L. Thompson

One of the most exciting things about being around children's books is realizing that many of them are not just for children. Many picture books in our collection are filled with meaningful themes that challenge even the most sophisticated adult mind. Some are rich with poetic verse and others with fantastical humor. They make you stop. Think. Laugh. Cry. Remember.

Our theme for summer reading is Be Creative. And, don't let that fool you. Being creative is not just for kids. In these challenging times we, as adults, are having to be creative in many ways: with finances, family time, and even summer vacation plans. Sometimes it's nice to be reminded of where our own free minds can take us. In the exquisit children's book Imagine A Place, author Sarah L. Thomson's poetic text combined with the gorgeous illustrations of Rob Gonsalves, remind us of the creative powers of the imaginary.

If you can imagine a place. You can go there.

Come on in and ask a librarian for other children's titles you'll love just as much as (maybe more than) your kids.

We look forward to seeing you!

Get Ready... Get Set... Get Creative!

By now you've received your library newsletter and can see all the wonderful activities and fun events we have planned for summer. Whether it's storytime or Lego building, chess or wire sculpting, the Children's Room has something for everyone. Please check the calendar for registration dates. The theme for our summer reading club is Be Creative @ Your Library. The reading club is for ages 3 1/2 through Grade 5. Continuous registration begins June 22 though August 7, 2009.

Congratulations as well to Jeff Kinney's book Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which won the 2009 3 Apples Book Award. Thank you to all who stopped by to vote!

We look forward to seeing you. Happy reading!

Finding The Book That Fits

Here in the Children's Room we know how hard it could be to find "just the right book". Whether it's fantasy, adventure, non-fiction, or a classic, we always do our best to lead children in the right direction. We love books, so we read all the time, and have lots of booklists and suggestions to help narrow down the search.

The internet is also a great place to look to find exciting titles. The website Read Kiddo Read, from author James Patterson, is dedicated to children's literacy and offers book selections by age and genre as well as great reading resources for parents. Take a look for yourself.

We look forward to seeing you.

Wow! A Great Time Was Had By All!

Thank you to all of our wonderful Syosset Public Library patrons, families, and guests that came out in the rain to join us for yesterday's Open House event. The Children's Room was jam-packed and all a buzz with fun activities and smiling faces. Thanks also to our teen volunteers who helped our littlest patrons with their crafts. A wonderful time was had by all.

The fun doesn't stop there... See our calendar for a list of all of our programming events. We have some great new reads in this week (see our Shelfari bookshelf on the right) and on Friday night May 8th, we are showing the action movie SpyKids at 7pm in the theater. No tickets are required, so come on in and enjoy movie night at the library.

We can't wait to see you!
